South Africa Suggested Itinerary - Knysna and Port Elizabeth are great places from which to explore the Garden Route, with great beaches and malaria-free safari reserves such as Addo Elephant.

 

The Garden Route, a lush and pristine area that mostly hugs the coastline from Mossel Bay through to the indigenous forests of the Tsitsikamma has much to offer the international tourist. Not only is it achingly beautiful, a rugged coastline, interspersed with stretches of sun drenched beach, for languid summer days in the sun, guests will enjoy Knysna's Lagoon, known for its oyster beds, Oudtshoorn, just over the Outenique Mountains, is the heart of the ostrich farming industry in South Africa and home to the enormous and mystical Cango Caves. Visit an elephant sanctuary, a monkey and primate sanctuary and a free flight bird enclosure, hop on-board a dolphin and whale boat excursion, or enjoy the many galleries and crafts, as the area is a thriving artists community, their well of inspiration, the very area in which they congregate - South Africa's Garden Route.

Port Elizabeth has also become the hub for safaris within the Eastern Cape. Surrounding Port Elizabeth are a plethora of game reserves, that offer a superb safari experience, many of which also boast Africa's Big Five. Go on safari in the Addo Elephant National Park, where conservation efforts literally saved the elephant, that once roamed unhindered and in abundance in the area from extinction. Private game reserves have mushroomed in recent years within the Eastern Cape, banding together in their conservation efforts, with a safari offering that is quite exceptional.

We interrupt our journey along this celebrated route, to show you the famed cliff formations of the Knysna ‘Heads’, and we take you to our true Garden of Eden, followed by a tour to the Birds of Eden, the largest free flight walk-through aviary in the world. A short hop away is Monkeyland, sanctuary and home to numerous monkey species from around the world. It’s fascinating. And rest assured, as we move from Knysna to Plett as it’s known locally, we’ll all be keeping our eyes peeled for schools of dolphins which frequent this coastline. It’s a wonderfully graceful sight, and a fitting cherry on the top of a delightful day.

Our day closes with a visit to one of South Africa’s most popular – and elite – holiday destinations, Plettenberg Bay. A day of vast contrasts awaits you on this intriguing full day tour of the Oudtshoorn district in the Little Karoo. You’ll be climbing passes, walking underground, and spending quality time with ostriches! We begin our day with a spectacular drive over the Outenique Mountain Pass into the feather capital of the world, Oudtshoorn, where you’ll get up close and personal with ostriches on a Karoo ostrich farm. You’ll have the opportunity to go right into the Cango Caves with its magnificent dripstone formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and we’ll also visit the Cango Wildlife Ranch to marvel at crocodiles, snakes and numerous big and beautiful cats of the wild variety. As we said, a day of wild contrasts in Oudtshoorn, but likely to produce a feather in your cap!

From Port Elizabeth - Half Day Tour

The coastal city of Port Elizabeth is steeped in history, and a half day spent here provides a superb overview of its significant role in the South African story. The history of Port Elizabeth is bound up with that of the arrival of the 1820 British Settlers, and the remnants of that pivotal time still lingers. We’ll explore the many memorable sights of the City, and enjoy its superb examples of exquisite Victorian and Edwardian architecture. We’ll travel along the beachfront, past the harbour and into the old town, with a visit to Settler’s Park and St George’s Park, proud home of eastern Province cricket.
