Addo Elephant National Park - Being a malaria-free game reserve and it's proximity to The Garden Route, has resulted in increased safari seekers visiting this Game Reserve and making it the perfect family safari destination - children are welcome in most of the lodges.
The Greater Addo Elephant National Park is situated about 72km's from Port Elizabeth and is the only game reserve where the Addo Elephant is still found. Known as the 'valley of elephants and roses', the park was established to save this elephant from extinction and is now the most concentrated elephant reserve in Africa.
Addo is home to the 'Big 5' (elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard and lion). Bird watching is also excellent.
The boundaries of the Addo Elephant National Park have grown and many exclusive private game reserves now form part of the Greater Addo Elephant National Park. Some of these are Shamwari Private Game Reserve, Pumba Game Reserve, Kwandwe Private Game Reserve etc.
The Shamwari Private Game Reserve is situated in verdant bush along the Bushmans River, halfway between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown, a pleasant drive from Cape Town and forms a natural extension to the famous Garden Route.
Shamwari has received numerous international awards for conservation and offers various activities such as Ranger School, Field Guide Training and is home to 2 Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries.
