Kruger walking safari
Rhino Walking Safaris specializes in luxury walking safaris in 12,000 hectares of pristine bushveld in the only wilderness concession in the Kruger National Park. The concession shares a 15km un-fenced boundary with the famous Mala Mala and Sabi Sand reserve with an abundance of wildlife moving freely between the two reserves. The concession is noted as an excellent game viewing area and good sightings can be expected.

Rhino Walking Safaris also has exclusive use of some of the Kruger National Park’s public roads for evening game drives, well after gate closing times (sunset), ensuring guests an unforgettable experience. Highly qualified guides share their wealth of bush knowledge with you – from the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects and birds to the medicinal uses of plants, folklore and basic tracking and survival skills.

Follow elephant paths and rhino trails on foot through this environmentally sensitive area that offers the Big Five as well as a diversity of fauna and flora. Accommodation and service is of the highest quality and each safari is tailor-made to include a combination of camps.

Guests wanting to enjoy a unique experience will be able walk out to our “Sleep Outs” on elevated wooden platforms (weather permitting).

Rhino Walking Safaris have two camps - Plains Camp and Rhino Post Safari Lodge.

Plains Camp:
Plains Camp luxury tented accommodation

Plains Camp has four, luxury African explorer-style tents overlooking the spectacular Timbitene plain and waterhole. The camp is built in authentic pioneer tradition and is raised on wooden decks. Stylishly decorated, the 8-bed camp offers the tranquility of a 19th century naturalist’s retreat. An African book collection and antique treasures are reminiscent of a golden era.

Plains Camp is the home of Rhino Walking Safaris. Rhino Walking Safaris offers exclusive guided walking trails with expert guides in the Kruger National Park.

The camp is in the middle of a 12,000 ha private wilderness concession, where it seems the rest of the world no longer exists, and guests are ensured of superb game sightings.

A typical day at Plains Camp begins with a mug of steaming coffee and traditional homemade rusks, after which guests set out on their morning walk, following rhino tracks and elephant paths. The length of the walks depend on the interest and fitness of the guests. Returning to camp, enjoy a leisurely brunch and relax in the cool of the acacia trees, keeping an eye on the waterhole for the breeding herd of elephant that frequently come to drink. Following high tea, set out again in the late afternoon for a walking safari or game drive and then indulge in a sunset cocktail.

For a totally unrivaled wilderness experience, guests are able to walk from Plains Camp to the Sleep outs. These are 4m high elevated wooden platforms with tents on the top level where guests will be able to literally sleep out under the stars! The Sleepout Decks overlook the Xiteveteve waterhole, provide the ultimate in bush experiences.

Sleepout tents in the Kruger National Park

This is an activity we offer usually as part of the walking trail experience from Plains Camp or occasionally (by prior arrangement, and by vehicle, not walking) from Rhino Post. Guests sleep on individual sleeping decks, connected by ladders and walkways to each other, the bathrooms and the main deck. Dinner is cooked over the open fire.

Rhino Post Safari Lodge

Rhino Post Safari Lodge accommodation

Rhino Post Safari Lodge is a 16-bed lodge, set on the banks of the Mutlumuvi Riverbed, in a 12,000 ha private wilderness concession in the Kruger National Park. This unique wilderness area offers eco-tourists the ideal place for encounters with the Big Five and allows visitors to track elephant and rhino on foot or view them from the comfort of open safari vehicles.

The nature of a wilderness area is that there are no permanent structures, so Rhino Post Safari Lodge was built using natural materials of stone, wood, thatch and canvas to create an authentic bush ambiance. Each luxury suite is exquisitely decorated and includes a spacious bedroom with with impressive views of the riverbed from the bathroom, outdoor shower and decked patio.

Following a game drive, guests can relax in the revitalizing swimming pool, take in the views from the shaded patio and watch the abundant wildlife amble down to the waterhole. Sumptuous meals are served in the camp’s dining area, which is set under magnificent Tamboti trees. The lounge, with its extensive wine cellar, cozy fireplace and bar, is the perfect spot for a sundowner.

In the spirit of wilderness areas worldwide, Rhino Post Safari Lodge has been specially designed and built to have minimal impact on the environment. Few permanent structures were used in the construction of this magnificent camp. Low energy lighting, natural materials, raised walkways and bedrooms are but some of the low impact measures we have taken.

Walking Trails:
Rhino Walking Safari in the Kruger National Park

Walking trails are limited to eight guests who are guided by two armed rangers.  Our guides meet the stringent requirements of the South African National Parks and senior guides hold the highest guiding qualification possible in South Africa.
After an introductory brief on the “do’s” and “do not's” of bush walking safaris, the guide will structure the trail taking into account the fitness level of the group and any special requests.  Departures are before breakfast and again in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, with the average walk being between three and four hours.  Walks may be lengthened or shortened depending on the group’s desires and fitness levels.
Our guides will share their wealth of bush culture, the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects, birds and the medicinal uses of plants, local folklore and basic tracking and survival skills.  Nothing is predictable in the bush, therefore each safari offers a potentially new experience.

A Typical Trail
A typical trail may start at Rhino Post Safari Lodge where guests enjoy morning and evening game drives in open 4 x 4 vehicles.  On the day of departure from this lodge, just after mid morning breakfast, guests will be transferred to their tented accommodation at Plains Camp.
The heat of the day will be spent at this camp enjoying our small African book collection, or the plunge pool overlooking the Timbetene Plain and waterhole, which is often host to zebra, buffalo, giraffe, elephant, rhino and lion.  High tea is followed by an afternoon walk and sundowners and then back to the camp for a hearty dinner.

The following day after an early morning wake-up and an invigorating cup of fresh coffee (or tea) in the lounge, guests set off on trail where our guides will share their experience of the diverse areas situated within the proximity of Plains Camp.

For something completely different and a totally unrivaled wilderness experience, guests are able to walk from Plains Camp to our Sleepouts.  These are 4m high elevated wooden platforms with tents on the top level where guests will be able to literally sleep out under the stars!  This is the only place in the Kruger National Park offering this unusual accommodation.

There are several trails available, all of which cater for every possibility; be it one camp, two camps or all three.  Some of the suggested trails are:
