Rhino Walking Safaris have two camps - Plains Camp and Rhino Post Safari Lodge.
Plains Camp:

Plains Camp has four, luxury African explorer-style tents overlooking the spectacular Timbitene plain and waterhole. The camp is built in authentic pioneer tradition and is raised on wooden decks. Stylishly decorated, the 8-bed camp offers the tranquility of a 19th-century naturalist’s retreat. An African book collection and antique treasures are reminiscent of a golden era.
Plains Camp is the home of Rhino Walking Safaris. Rhino Walking Safaris offers exclusive guided walking trails with expert guides in the Kruger National Park.

The camp is in the middle of a 12,000 ha private wilderness concession, where it seems the rest of the world no longer exists, and guests are ensured of superb game sightings.
A typical day at Plains Camp begins with a mug of steaming coffee and traditional homemade rusks, after which guests set out on their morning walk, following rhino tracks and elephant paths. The length of the walks depends on the interest and fitness of the guests. Returning to camp, enjoy a leisurely brunch and relax in the cool of the acacia trees, keeping an eye on the waterhole for the breeding herd of elephants that frequently come to drink. Following high tea, set out again in the late afternoon for a walking safari or game drive and then indulge in a sunset cocktail.

For a totally unrivaled wilderness experience, guests are able to walk from Plains Camp to the Sleep outs. These are 4m high elevated wooden platforms with tents on the top level where guests will be able to literally sleep out under the stars! The Sleep out Decks overlook the Xiteveteve waterhole and provide the ultimate in bush experiences.

This is an activity we offer usually as part of the walking trail experience from Plains Camp or occasionally (by prior arrangement, and by vehicle, not walking) from Rhino Post. Guests sleep on individual sleeping decks, connected by ladders and walkways to each other, the bathrooms, and the main deck. Dinner is cooked over the open fire.
Rhino Post Safari Lodge

Rhino Post Safari Lodge is a 16-bed lodge, set on the banks of the Mutlumuvi Riverbed, in a 12,000 ha private wilderness concession in the Kruger National Park. This unique wilderness area offers Eco-tourists the ideal place for encounters with the Big Five and allows visitors to track elephants and rhinos on foot or view them from the comfort of open safari vehicles.
The nature of a wilderness area is that there are no permanent structures, so Rhino Post Safari Lodge was built using natural materials of stone, wood, thatch, and canvas to create an authentic bush ambiance. Each luxury suite is exquisitely decorated and includes a spacious bedroom with impressive views of the riverbed from the bathroom, outdoor shower, and decked patio.
Following a game drive, guests can relax in the revitalizing swimming pool, take in the views from the shaded patio and watch the abundant wildlife amble down to the waterhole. Sumptuous meals are served in the camp’s dining area, which is set under magnificent Tamboti trees. The lounge, with its extensive wine cellar, cozy fireplace, and bar, is the perfect spot for a sun downer.
In the spirit of wilderness areas worldwide, Rhino Post Safari Lodge has been specially designed and built to have minimal impact on the environment. Few permanent structures were used in the construction of this magnificent camp. Low energy lighting, natural materials, raised walkways and bedrooms are but some of the low-impact measures we have taken.

Rhino Post
A night at the Sleep out decks is available from Rhino Post as an optional activity. There is no extra cost for a group of 4 or more. For 3 or fewer guests a surcharge will be levied. Prior arrangement is required and subject to availability.
Plains Camp - Sleep outs are totally weather dependent. The first guests to reserve a trail determines whether a Sleep out will be done on that trail or not. If the first guests who reserve the trail request the Sleep out then all guests on that trail will do a Sleep out. If the first guests to book the trail stipulate that they do not wish to do a Sleep out then nobody on that trail will be able to do a Sleep out.
Walking Trails:

Walking trails are limited to eight guests who are guided by two armed rangers. Our guides meet the stringent requirements of the South African National Parks and senior guides hold the highest guiding qualification possible in South Africa.
After an introductory brief on the “do’s” and “do nots” of bush walking safaris, the guide will structure the trail taking into account the fitness level of the group and any special requests. Departures are before breakfast and again in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, with the average walk being between three and four hours. Walks may be lengthened or shortened depending on the group’s desires and fitness levels.
Our guides will share their wealth of bush culture, the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects, birds, and the medicinal uses of plants, local folklore, and basic tracking and survival skills. Nothing is predictable in the bush, therefore each safari offers a potentially new experience.
A Typical Trail
A typical trail may start at Rhino Post Safari Lodge where guests enjoy morning and evening game drives in open 4 x 4 vehicles. On the day of departure from this lodge, just after mid-morning breakfast, guests will be transferred to their tented accommodation at Plains Camp.
The heat of the day will be spent at this camp enjoying the small African book collection, or the plunge pool overlooking the Timbetene Plain and waterhole, which often hosts zebra, buffalo, giraffe, elephant, rhino, and lion. High tea is followed by an afternoon walk and sun downers and then back to the camp for a hearty dinner.
The following day after an early morning wake-up and an invigorating cup of fresh coffee (or tea) in the lounge, guests set off on trail where our guides will share their experience of the diverse areas situated within the proximity of Plains Camp.
For something completely different and a totally unrivaled wilderness experience, guests are able to walk from Plains Camp to our Sleep outs. These are 4m high elevated wooden platforms with tents on the top level where guests will be able to literally sleep out under the stars! This is the only place in the Kruger National Park offering this unusual accommodation.
There are several trails available, all of which cater to every possibility; be it one camp, two camps, or all three. Some of the suggested trails are:
Per person sharing per night |
1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024 |
3-night trail (1-night Rhino Post & 2 nights Plains Camp) | R22 638 |
4-night trail (2 nights Rhino Post & 2 nights Plains Camp) | R29 568 |
5-night trail (3 nights Rhino Post & 2 nights Plains Camp) | R35 613 |
*Sleep Outs are totally weather dependent. The first guests to reserve a trail determine whether a Sleep Out will be done on that trail or not. If the first guests who reserve the trail request a Sleep Out then all guests on that trail will do a Sleep Out. If the first guests to book the trail stipulate that they do not wish to do a Sleep Out then nobody on that trail will be able to do a Sleep Out.
