Namibia attractions - Sossusvlei is one of the Namib Desert’s most unique and spectacular sites. Located in the Namib Naukluft Park, the 'vlei' (pan) is a clay pan surrounded by the remarkable red dunes.

On very rare occasions following heavy rainfall, the pan fills with water and the surrounding extreme desolation make it an unusual and spectacular sight. Mostly, the pan remains dry and cracked by the baking sun.

Dead Vlei (Sossusvlei, Namibia)

The dunes at Sossusvlei are said to be the highest in the world and reach more than 300m when measured from the base. These star-shaped dunes are formed by strong multi-directional winds and are best viewed at sunrise when the rich and constantly changing colours are at their best. It is said the older the dune, the brighter the colour and these colours are truly remarkable.

At the entry to Sossusvlei is Sesriem Canyon, a 30m deep canyon carved by the Tsauchab River. The dunes are about 60km's from the gate at Sesriem which takes about an hour to drive. Nearby is the spectacular Dead Vlei (salt encrusted dry lake) with its pure white clay floor and dead camel thorn tree trunks.
This area is world renowned for its star gazing due to its remoteness. With no cities or lights, the skies above are spectacular.

Accommodation around this area is varied from camp sites to 5 star lodges.

Getting to Sossusvlei is best by light aircraft. The road from Windhoek and Swakopmund are mostly gravel and known for their accidents... We would definitely recommend a 4x4 or at least a 2x4 as it is very easy to loose control on the loose gravel and bends.

The Namib-Naukluft Park is one of the country's major tourist destinations. The vast wilderness of almost 50 000 km's contain key features such as Sossusvlei, Sesriem, the Welwitschia Trail, Sandwich Harbour, the Naukluft Mountains and the Kuiseb Canyon. A combination of rocky Naukluft Mountains and wide open plains to towering red dunes provide the most amazing beauty and make this region one of Africa's most photographed destinations. It is also renowned for its desert-adapted flora and fauna and said to be one of the oldest deserts in the world.
