Namibia attractions - Windhoek is the capital of Namibia and as such is everything one would expect of a capital city. The city is located in a basin between the Auas Mountains (to the south east), the Eros Mountains (to the north east) and the Khomas Hochland (to the west).
It is one of the cleanest and safest African cities that has managed to retain some of it's 'Old German' charm from the days of German Colonialism.
The city is home to approximately 200 000 people so is relatively small in comparison to most capitals.
Windhoek's high altitude ensures a fairly temperate climate. Be warned that the evenings can get chilly which is a welcome respite after the long, warm days.
Windhoek is often the starting point for your travels as it is the only Namibian city with an international airport. A number of tours of Namibia will include either your first night or last night in Windhoek. There are 2 airports in Windhoek - Hosea Kutako International Airport is located about 40km's out of town and Eros Airport which is used mainly for charter flights.
Windhoek is also a great conference destination.
Windhoek is probably most famous for it’s beer named after the city (Windhoek - Lager, Draft & Light is available) and a visit to the breweries is very enjoyable (on certain days at the moment so please check). The other local beer, Tafel Lager, is also brewed by the same company.
Activities offered in and around Windhoek include:
City and Township Tour, Township Dinner, Motorcycle safari, Quad Bike Game Drive, Helicopter Safari, Hiking Trails, African Drumming, 4 x 4 Trail team building, Namibian Breweries Tour, Light aircraft flights at sunset or sundown etc.
A must visit in Windhoek is the famous Joe's Beerhouse where you will find locals and visitors enjoying the warm hospitality. Joe’s Beerhouse is truly Namibian and one of Africa’s many wide-spread legends. The restaurant is filled with relics of old and collections of new, each artifact with its very own story and humor like these toilets as bar stools.
