Changa Safari Camp Kariba activities
WALKING Arguably the best way to experience and feel in touch with the African bush. Changa's professional guides have a thorough knowledge of the area and, accompanied by them, you can experience Matusadona and ‘at its best’. Walks are conducted in the early mornings and late afternoons for your comfort. Make sure you come equipped with appropriate footwear, track shoes are not ideal and they are pervious to grass seeds and thorns.
GAME DRIVES on our concession and into the National Park in the morning before and after breakfast, and after mid-afternoon tea. Game drives may be by vehicle or boat.
FISHING For those guests who would like to have a go at catching their lunch or dinner (you catch and we prepare for you), or indeed at landing the famed fighting tiger fish, we have experienced guides available for this activity.
SANYATI GORGE -A short boat road across the lake will bring you to the scenic Sanyati Gorge, where you can meander peacefully through the steep cliffs for up to 10 km. The Sanyati Gorge is both unspoilt and undisturbed with an abundance of birdlife, the occasional sighting of antelope and great fishing. Don’t forget your camera and binoculars for this activity as the dramatic landscape will leave you speechless.
Lake Kariba and Matusadona National Park
The Matusadona National Park consists of some 338000 acres of unspoiled and unfenced splendor. Rugged mountains, springs and streams, Miomba woodlands and Mopane scrublands, pristine riverine vegetation, crystal clear lake water and grass flanked shoreline all combine to create a unique habitat for healthy populations of African Mammals. Elephants, who have adapted to a semi aquatic lifestyle, frequent the shoreline, as do numerous species of antelope, their feeding patterns governed by the ever changing lake levels. Lion, leopard, hyena and cheetah occur in good numbers and a small, but very important population of the endangered black rhino, roam the Park.
Lake Kariba is the world’s largest man-made lake, covering almost 5,600 square kilometers and this vast expanse of fresh water is home to some fantastic fish species including the famous Tiger fish, Tilapia bream, Catfish and the mighty Vundu. For most of the year, Lake Kariba is truly one of the greatest places in Africa for fishing.
The birdlife is prolific with in excess of 240 species having been identified in the Park. Of particular interest are the many different species of water fowl seen busying the shoreline or perched on one of the putrefied and partially submerged trees that have stood since the creation of the lake some 50 years ago. These airy trees, remnants of great hard wood forests, provide homes for bats and insects, vantage points and nesting sites for fish eagles, darters, cormorants and king fishers. It is truly a ‘WATER WILDERNESS’.
How to get there:
Flying in over Lake Kariba is something truly incredible, leaving you with a clear idea of just how vast the lake is and conjuring up magical stories of what lies underneath the depth of blue waters. You will enjoy views of the rugged Matusadona mountain terrain, outcroppings of islands, a sea of white trees jutting out of the glass like water and herds of elephants grazing on the new shoots of green grass on the shorelines.
There are several chartered flight options from Harare, Hwange, Mana Pools and Victoria Falls where you fly into Fothergill Island and then a 15 minute boat ride to camp or fly to Kariba and the 45 minute boat ride to camp.
From Harare to Kariba by road will take about 4 hours where you will get taken to camp by boat, a journey of 45 minutes.
The Hide:
Situated on the eastern boundary of the famous Hwange National Park in a 5 square km area, The Hide Safari Lodge is one of the few private camps in the National Park itself. The Hide has been voted 16 consecutive times as the “Best Safari Camp – Tented“ so you know your trip is going to be exceptional.

Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe's largest park both in size (just over 14 600 square kilometres) and in the variety of animals that can be seen here (over 100 mammal and 400 bird species). It has long been known for its abundant and diverse wildlife. In particular, the park is known for herds of elephant (in excess of 20,000 now) and what is thought to be one of the largest populations of African wild dog left in the world. Large prides of lion and buffalo are frequently seen here and you have a good chance of spotting leopard in addition to cheetah and spotted hyena. The wild and woolly brown hyena also occurs here and is something of a rarity.
A significant feature of Hwange is the absence of permanent surface water. Animals rely heavily on a series of waterholes, many of which dry up completely during drought years. The Friends of Hwange now maintain a number of these waterholes throughout the year thereby ensuring the livelihoods of thousands of animals, and excellent game viewing as wildlife congregates at these points.
Whether on a drive to one of Hwange’s game-rich pans, on foot within our private concession or sleeping out in the Dove’s Nest, there is never a dull moment. In fact, the waterhole just metres from The Hide attracts such a variety of life that you may not need to roam far from your verandah to be a part of the action.
The park is situated between Bulawayo and the world famous Victoria Falls. Hwange park is about a 2 hour drive from Victoria Falls. It has a good road infrastructure.
The Hide Hwange accommodation
Accommodation at The Hide Main Camp is in 10 large, East African style luxury canvas tents under thatch, all overlooking the main waterhole. The Tents have a myriad of different configurations with indoor and /or outdoor bathtubs and showers, hand basin and flush toilet along with a teak dressing table and, most importantly, piping hot water all day!
The spacious bedrooms are very tastefully furnished with solid Zimbabwe teak furniture and each is individually decorated. There are eight standard tents and two luxury or honeymoon tents. Each tent is mosquito-proofed and has an en suite bathroom, a fan for your comfort in summer and extra warm blankets and hot water bottles for the cool winter months. One tent is wheelchair friendly.
The new Wine Cellar and Underground Hide at The Hide were planned, designed and created for the adventure-takers, the thrill-makers and the pleasure-seekers out there.
Just imagine:
You’re sitting on the deck at The Hide ‘A’ frame (main dining and lounge area). The sun has just set, its residual warmth a soft tinge of pink in the sky. Just then, a family of elephants strolls into the scene and up to the waterhole. You watch, fascinated by their interactions. Now, here’s where you jump into action. Without the need for a guide or host, you can go directly from the deck into the underground hide and observe the elephant family from up-close. Just step off the deck and slip down the steps into a whole new world. Along a tunnel, you’ll walk for about 10 metres under the surface of the earth – and then emerge into a “window on the waterhole”, where you can sit quietly, the unobserved observing. It’s a special new addition and makes the experience of “game viewing” more intense and personal.
Needless to say, the photographic opportunities at this range are unequaled.
Along the same tunnel, guests are delighted to find, hidden away in the wall, a real wine cellar. Perfectly cooled at a steady 17 degrees Celsius, ambient-lit and stocked with a small selection of fine wines from around the world, this is a welcome addition to an already all-sensory experience at The Hide. Guests are invited to choose the wine they’d like with dinner – or suggestions are made based on wine pairing experts’ recommendations.
Activities/excursions offered are: morning and afternoon guided walks, morning and afternoon game drives; night drives with a spotlight, “hide sits‟ around pans and bush breakfasts. An overnight sleep-out in the “Dove‟s Nest” tree house for 2 people can be arranged.
The Hide Hwange Safari wild dog
The park has a notable bird population with over 400 species recorded to date; the variety is truly astonishing. Morning, afternoon and evening/night drives will normally head out for 2-3 hours through a variety of eco-systems and habitats. We like to stop for coffee or tea and biscuits in a lovely spot and see what might happen past. In the late afternoon, we’ll find a place to pull out the cooler boxes and watch the sun set with due reverence – every one is different.
This package offers great value at prime areas in Zimbabwe with some of the best safari guides - we can highly recommend both camps. It combines with Mana Pool well and we can add on any other options so let us know what you would like or how many nights you have available so we can customize your Zimbabwe Itinerary.
