There is a mystical place at the foot of the Waterberg Mountains on the ancient trade route through Southern Africa, from the mighty towers of the north, over the raging rivers and across vast plains teeming with game. In this hidden place, discover Marataba, epitomising all that is Africa.

This luxurious game lodge reflects Africa’s ancient wisdom and culture, the glorious forms and colour presenting a vibrant haven at the epicentre of modern design. Enter a sanctuary of mystery in harmony with the energy of nature and the environment, built of indigenous stone, timber, sand and soil, enhanced by murmuring waters and vast vistas liberated by glass walls.

Inspired by the discovery of primeval ruins, Marataba embraces both the contemporary and the ancient in an exciting union of innovative architecture, design and technology, paying tribute to, and confirming, the concept of the African Renaissance. Lulled by the heartbeat of the bushveld, awed by towering mountains, enthralled by the abundance of wildlife, secure and sensually nurtured in the indulgent atmosphere, live your dreams of safari at Marataba, the place where the plains touch the mountains.

Marataba is a member of Relais & Chateaux.

A permanent flowing river, completes the landscape of mountains, trees and sky – the backdrop to the big 5 game experience and the drama of the bush. A clever combination of stone and canvas create a unique feature for the suites, with an addition modern twist for the interiors.

As an extension of the natural environment which inspired its creation, the lodge is built ‘of the earth’ around sound ecological methods and principles. This is the place for the person who is after a “Digital Detox’, wanting to disconnect completely. With neither Wi-Fi nor cellphone reception the sun shares just enough of its energy to power selected equipment such as cameras, iPads and phones to ensure they are always at the ready to capture another glorious day. With the absence of modern amenities and technology, this lodge is utterly remote, promising authentic exclusivity where you are one-on-one with Nature.

The Marakele National Park
The Marakele National Park in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains, as its Tswana name suggests, has become a 'place of sanctuary' for an impressive variety of wildlife due to its location in the transitional zone between the dry western and moister eastern regions of South Africa.

Contrasting majestic mountain landscapes, grass-clad hills and deep valleys characterize the park. Rare finds of yellowwood and cedar trees, five metre high cycads and tree ferns, are some of the plant species found here. All the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats as well as an amazing variety of birds including what’s probably the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures (more than 800 breeding pairs) in the world, have settled here.

Marataba is 310km from Johannesburg International Airport (about 4 hours), approximately 164km from Sun City (approximately 2 hours).

Marataba Safari Lodge:
Exclusive bush luxury eptomizes the contemporary design of the Marataba's main lodge area and the 16 luxury tented suites. Each tented suite has been carefully incorporated into the surrounding bushveld while a canopy of African trees provide vital shade.
What  makes  the  Marataba  experience  particularly  special  is  that  it  is  a  story  about  nature,  animals  and  people.  It  is  a  story  about  personal commitment and dedication, about putting natural resources to best use, and about public-private partnership. It started with the commitment of Nelson Mandela, Mavuso Msimang (then CEO of South African National Parks) and Valli Moosa (then Environmental Minister), together with a passionate group of individuals who wanted to make a difference to nature in a sustainable way. This soon became a tradition taken up by the present owner families
Children six years and older are welcome at Marataba Safari Lodge. There are many activities available for children including: family safari drives, bush orientation, bug CSI, dung tracking, track pack with Plaster of Paris, star gazing, games night and much more. Children aged six to fifteen pay 50% of the per person sharing rate.

Unique Aspects
The Marakele Reserve is unique in respect of topography, flora and fauna.
Walking Marataba offers the only Malaria-free Big 5 walking trail in South Africa.
The variety of terrain and vegetation makes for a unique walking experience every time you leave the camp.
These are true wilderness trails, with no sign of civilization. It’s just you and the wilderness.
Marataba Mountain Lodge is all about healthy living, and guests are treated to an interactive culinary experience with Marataba’s chef who specializes in fresh, organic and delicious meals – many of which are prepared over an open fire.
The Programme:
All trails are based on either two or three night departures. The day of the week that a specific trail departs will depend on the first confirmed booking for that week.

The Trails:
Marataba is blessed with a great diversity of eco-systems and landscapes. The trails make use of different areas of the reserve, ensuring a variety of experiences. Guides will assess each of the individual guests, and will match trails to suit fitness levels and walkers’ personal preferences.

Riverine Trails – These trails follow the natural river course, and are great for ‘bumping’ into general game. Walkers will traverse to some of the bigger waterholes which attract a number of animal species, including hippo.

Gorge Trails – These trails descend into the gorges of the Waterberg Mountains. Here walkers will traverse into unchartered areas of the reserve only accessible by foot. There may even be an opportunity to have a swim in one of the fresh water pools!

Mountain Trails – A few of the longer trails move up and over some of the mountains in the reserve into neighbouring valleys. The vistas from these trails are second-to-none, presenting Africa in all its vastness.

Interest Trails – There is significant history to this the reserve, and these trails will offer walkers the opportunity to see cave paintings, iron age ruins and other relics of The Stone Age.

Morning and afternoon trails depart from the camp each day.

Evenings are spent in good company around the fire in the boma, learning about bush cooking techniques, local customs and legends. Astronomy finds its best practical application beneath these heavens!
