The capital of Mozambique is Maputo (formerly Lourenzo Marques) which still bears the scars of civil war that ravaged the country several years back. The city is slowly restoring its old Portuguese-style colonial buildings and it seems there are only good things to come.

This sprawling city has a population of about 2million people and has a large bustling harbor. You will not be short of things to do in Maputo from a museum of Mozambican history, the Natural History Museum, a military museum and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima to the bars and nightclubs. Maputo is a lively mix of people with lots of markets, street vendors, a vibey cafe culture and a more relaxed way of life than most cities.
Maputo is the gateway to the beaches of the north and south and also to the Maputo Elephant Reserve which is increasingly popular due to the restoration program that is underway.
From Maputo, there is a regular fairy service to Inhaca Island or a 10 minute flight. Inhaca Island is a natural paradise of breathtaking coral reefs and beaches almost 40km's off the coast of Maputo. This is a diver’s and deep sea fishing paradise.
Portuguese Island is a deserted island just northwest of Inhaca and it has magnificent beaches and a lagoon. Home to countless birds, amazing marine life and mangrove trees, it is a protected reserve.
