andBeyond Benguerra - the freshest cusine
Benguerra is a unique, African island paradise washed by the turquoise waters of the warm Moçambique channel. The Lodge is small and intimate offering personalized service and barefoot luxury.

Benguerra is the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, approximately 55 square kilometers (11km long x 5.5 km wide), and lies 14km offshore. It is famous for its unspoiled white beaches, remarkable dive sites and excellent fishing (subject to a strict “catch & release” policy).

Some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the world is available off Benguerra’s shores with the surrounding coral reefs rich in sea life. The archipelago is one of the last remaining habitats of the endangered Dugong.

Inland, Benguerra Island comprises forest, savannah, freshwater lakes and wetland eco systems that sustain a diverse population of fauna and flora. Fresh water crocodiles can be found in the three lakes, bearing testimony to the island’s mainland past. The island, which is home to approximately 140 bird species, was declared a National Park in 1971.

&Beyond Benguerra Island Lodge and the Bazaruto National Park strive, in conjunction with the community and other related parties, to maintain the diverse and pristine environment for the enjoyment of future generations. Since the inception of the Lodge in 1988, its owners, management and staff have been intricately involved in the ecological preservation and conservation of the island’s heritage. The co-operation of the island’s local community and the adoption of eco-tourism and modern conservation practices have already demonstrated numerous benefits. Ask us for more information on community projects.

Indulge yourself in countless hours of relaxation under coconut palms, delight in the diversity of bird life, visit the historic freshwater lakes (and their crocodiles), sail in a traditional Dhow and search the seas for the legendary dugongs... You can choose to do as much, or as little, as you like.

andBeyond Benguerra Cabana - private plunge pool
Light and airy, spacious casinhas and cabanas combine tropical chic with a distinct touch of Africa and the Mozambican coastline’s Portuguese heritage. Wide doors and windows allow for magnificent ocean views and private rim flow pools set on wide wooden decks provide a cool refuge.

Colorfully ornamented, a traditional wooden dhow has found its final resting place on the beach, offering the ideal spot to indulge in an ice cold cocktail or a delicious meal of fresh, fragrant seafood. Local sailing boats carry you out to sea on dhow cruises and the billowing dunes and soft sands invite you to explore the marvels of this extraordinary island. After days filled with discovery, weary muscles relax and recharge under the magical attentions of the masseuses in the massage sala.

Spread out along warm, golden sands, every room and guest area at &Beyond Benguerra Island opens out onto a spectacle of sparkling ocean waters. Boasting a fresh island feel, the lodge’s welcoming guest areas offer views of the lush tropical garden and the ocean beyond.

Set deep in cleverly created patches of shade, comfortable loungers beckon set around the lodge’s rim flow swimming pool look out onto the waves. Closer to the water’s edge, a colourful traditional dhow has been transformed into the perfect setting for an al fresco meal with your toes in the sand.
Set among a lush island forest, ten casinhas and two cabanas admit cooling sea breezes through wooden shutters and glazed windows and doors that fold back to frame the magnificent views.

A light and airy colour scheme combines tropical chic with a distinct African feel and reminders of the area’s Portuguese heritage. Set under thatch, both casinhas and cabanas boast elegant four-poster beds with white linen canopies and comfortable day beds. Spacious bathrooms feature generous bathtubs big enough for two, while outdoor showers decorated with hand-painted tiles offer an opportunity to enjoy your ablutions while listening to the nearby whisper of the waves.

Vast wooden verandas flow from outdoor dining areas ideal for starlit dinners to cool plunge pools that mimic the glimmer of the sea. A few short steps down a sandy path, shaded sun loungers on the open beach invite you to while the hours away.
