Diving - Bazaruto Island
The protected Bazaruto Marine National Park is a scuba diver's paradise, with crystal-clear waters and a range of dazzling soft coral ridges and reefs to explore. A host of exciting dives can be experienced here with reef fish such as snapper and surgeon, as well as potato bass, kingfish, barracuda, manta rays and reef sharks.
Above the water dolphin are frequently encountered whilst humpback whales can be sighted between August and October and whale sharks between April and July. Leatherback, loggerhead and green turtles are often seen in the water, coming ashore to lay their eggs on Bazaruto's sandy beaches. You may also be lucky enough to see a rare dugong - part of the largest viable breeding population in the western Indian Ocean.
Bazaruto Island's superb scuba diving locations include:
- Brindle Bass Ridge (North Point) - large reef (18 meters) with impressive concentrations of snappers, angelfish, rubberlips, brindle bass & reef sharks.
- Potholes (North Point) - series of shallow potholes (12 meters) often sheltering black-tail reef sharks.
- Manta Ray Reef (North Point) - flat reef (15 meters) with spectacular concentrations of anemones and clownfish.
- Rainbow Runner Reef (North Point) - (25 meters) with impressive accumulations of green-tree and whips corals.
- Turtle Ridge (North Point) - narrow ridge (14 meters) frequented by turtles and game-fish such as barracuda.
- Two-Mile Reef - well known for excellent snorkeling inside the reef and for exciting dives on the outside (6-21 meters).
- Zenguelema Point - this dive site, with a depth of 21m, is located on the western side of the island and is home to schools of Reef Fish, Scorpion Fish, Crocodile Fish and the occasional Stone Fish.
The on-site diving instructor co-ordinates the diving courses, from beginner courses to more advanced reef diving, and plans every diving trip taking care of all the details, from safety precautions to the final dive entry. PADI Instructors and Dive Masters are the minimum standard and we do not conduct technical or deep-water dives that warrant a chamber.
Fishing - Bazaruto Island

Extending six miles out to sea, the Bazaruto Archipelago has been a National Park since 1971. Most fish species occur inside the reserve boundaries and a strong marine conservation policy of tag and release is ensuring the sustainable use of the resource. The Archipelago is known as Africa's most productive area for Black, Blue and Striped Marlin and has produced Black Marlin in excess of 1000 pounds. Apart from Black Marlin in the summer months (October to March), there is a strong winter run of Sailfish (July to December) and a great variety of offshore species such as big Wahoo, Dorado, King Mackerel, Giant Trevally and Tuna. A diversity of inshore species on the leeward side of the islands means that Bazaruto is also an ideal destination for light-tackle and fly fishermen.
Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort offers a high quality Mozambique sport-fishing operation so that guests can experience the thrill of fighting one of the giants of the deep or reeling in a variety of game fish. The operation has a strong tag and release policy and to date has achieved an almost 100% release rate on all sailfish and marlin caught by guests.
Bazaruto Snorkeling

Bazaruto Boat Trips
On boat trips offshore, you may be privileged to view dolphins and marine turtles, as well as whales and whale sharks at certain times of year. If you are very lucky you may view the rare dugong (sea cow), an endangered sea mammal that sparked early seafarers' tales of mermaids. Boat trips to the nearby and deserted Paradise Island (Santa Carolina) for picnics and snorkeling can be arranged.
Bazaruto Bird Watching
On land Bazaruto plays host to more than 180 species of birds, a vast range of Palaearctic migrants, 26 species of waders and huge flocks of pelicans and flamingos in and around the coastal lakes and tidal pools. Bird lovers will revel in the splendor and diversity of the diverse bird life.
Bazuruto Water Sports
Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort is stocked with a full range of water sport equipment. Guests looking for action can water-ski in the calm waters off the central beach or opt for fun variants thereof (such as wake-snakes, wake-boards, knee-boards and doughnuts). A range of non motorised water sports, such as kayaking, windsurfing and Hobiecat sailing, is also on offer and equipment is up-to-date and well-maintained.
Bazaruto Dune Boarding

Bazaruto Island Drives
For guests who are interested in local flora, fauna and culture, informative drives in 4x4 vehicles around Bazaruto Island can be arranged. The drive will be tailor-made to suit your interests, which may include a visit to a local village, excursion to a 19th century lighthouse, bird-watching around unspoilt inland lakes, a trip to Sailfish Bay on the pristine eastern shore, or spectacular sunset drinks on the high central dunes.

The hardy and carefully selected Boerperds cater for novices and advanced riders alike. Set out in the early morning or late afternoon to explore the forests and dunes on the island, or select a breathtaking beach ride where you can canter along beautiful white sandy shores and even swim in the waves if you choose.
