Mashatu Game Reserve
Mashatu Game Reserve is a privately owned conservation wilderness area located in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, in the remote eastern corner of Botswana, in an area known historically as the Tuli Block/enclave. The reserve lies at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers  – a diverse wilderness of grassland, riverine forests, marshland, wide open plains and majestic rocky hills of sandstone outcrops.
The name is derived from the magnificent Mashatu or Nyala berry trees, which occur throughout this 29 000 hectares (72000 acres) of land and the giants that roam its terrain. This area is home to no less than seven of Africa’s giants: the African elephant (world's largest land animals now living), the lion (king of the beasts), the giraffe (world’s tallest mammal), the baobab tree (strong contender for world's largest tree & one of the longest living trees), the eland (world’s largest antelope), the ostrich (world’s largest bird) and the kori bustard (world’s heaviest flying bird).
Mashatu Game Reserve, an area of history and legend, offers some of the most exciting game viewing in Africa in open 4-wheel drive safari vehicles, guided by expert rangers and experienced trackers. It is home to large herds of elephant, prides of lions, leopards and cheetah, plus some lesser well-known, but interesting, species, including the aardwolf (or “earth wolf”), the bat-eared fox, the African wildcat, the honey badger, the spotted hyeana and the black-backed jackal.
Up to 350 species of birds can be seen here which makes it ideal for those interested in bird life and photography.
Photographic Safaris:
Guests can sit quietly and watch animals moving directly towards them in the amazing photographic hides, all the while taking pictures from unique angles, resulting in unique and exceptional quality photography. A resident wildlife photographer is based at Mashatu Lodge to guide participants when they are in camp. Guests can also enlist his/ her services while on game drives should they require further tutelage over and above time spent in the hides.
The services of a professional photographer in camp and the use of the photographic hides can be booked as an additional activity over and above the daily rates for accommodation.
Guests at Mashatu may use the hides for normal game viewing purposes as well as for photography. It must however be noted that regardless of their preference, they will always be accompanied by the photographic guide in the hides or a ranger from Mashatu Game Reserve.
Explore and have fun in the most unbelievably pristine game viewing areas in Southern Africa
Mashatu Main Camp:
For the client who is accustomed to luxury, this camp will meet every expectation. 14 luxury suites lie along the camp’s perimeter and are designed to allow absolute privacy and a communion with the bush and its inhabitants. Watch elephants splashing at the waterhole, listen to the lyrical melody of the woodlands kingfisher on a branch overhead, smell the grassy scent of the bushveld, and touch the bark of an ancient tree and inhale a breath of air so pure, it’s intoxicating.
Each of the air-conditioned suites at Mashatu Lodge (Main Camp) is tastefully decorated and includes impressive black and white prints of Africa’s most beautiful animals. A double bed and an extra-large single bed, together with a seating area that includes a single day bed, comfortably accommodates families with younger children. The ample en-suite bathroom with both bath and shower facilities and a separate W.C. complete the well-appointed suites. This is the ideal camp for the family traveler.
