Walking safari

The Okavango is an immense river that never meets the sea. Instead, its crystal clear waters spread across the Kalahari Desert, forming the worlds’ largest wetland wonder, before the formidable African sun swallows the last of its outstretched fingers.

The Delta is an abundant oasis amid the vast plains and pans of the desert that covers most of Southern Africa. Its waterways are a mesh of meandering and intercepting channels, creating a haven for Africa’s most celebrated wildlife species.

Enjoy two nights in the Delta, exploring its natural environment and its amazing fauna and flora.

Choose between five camps: Moremi Crossing, Gunn's Camp, Rra Dinare, Mma Dinare or Pom Pom for a mid-range/luxury Botswana safari (else ask us for any other camps you wish).

Moremi Crossing:
Moremi Crossing in Okavango Delta

Located near the most southern part of Chief's Island, Moremi Crossing is situated on a small palm fringed and treed island called Ntswi which is surrounded by the Moremi's game-rich seasonal floodplains. The main building houses a large open plan deck that has spectacular far reaching views over the Boro River onto Chiefs Island.

Luxury accommodation in 16 new-style vintage safari tents, each with its own private wooden deck and magical views over the Boro River on to Chief’s Island. All meru tents are large and airy with en suite bathrooms.

Moremi Crossing being a water based camp offers a wide variety of animal and bird species, walks on Chiefs Island give you the opportunity to get a better view of not just the big animals but the smaller insects and birds that contribute to the Okavango’s vast ecosystem. This is a 100% eco-friendly development featuring the latest in solar and waste disposal technology.

Gunn's Camp:
Gunns Camp luxury twin tent Okavango Delta

Gunn's Camp is one of the last few remaining luxury, vintage safari camps. Set under leafy palms and African Ebony to blend naturally with its unique surroundings, Gunn's Camp achieves a fine balance of comfort without isolating guests from the sights and sounds of the wilderness.

The accommodation offering at Gunn's Camp consists of seven fully furnished, deluxe Kenya-style meru tents with en-suite bathrooms set on raised platforms overlooking the delta plains. The honeymoon suite is built into one of the ancient African Ebony trees and demands unsurpassable views of the meandering waterways. The island is connected to the main camp by a small causeway crossing the wetlands and magically lit by a series of fairy-like lanterns. Guests have access to the elevated bar, lounge and dining room, campfire boma and swimming pool.

Mma and Rra Dinare
Rra Dinare accommodation deck

Mma and Rra Dinare are 2 new camps overlooking the Gomoti River in the South Eastern Okavango Delta.

Adjacent to Moremi Game reserve on south eastern side of the Delta, overlooking the Gomoti River and its flood plains, the camps are located in a private concession of 67,000 acres and have been designed to embrace the natural surroundings of the riverine forest. The airstrip which will be servicing the two camps is approximately 20min by chartered flight from Maun and 1h20min from Kasane. The camps are situated 45min game drive from the airstrip.

Since this area normally receives floods last it contains some of the closest dry-season watering points for the game that spreads out towards Nxai and Makgadikgadi Pans during the rains. Around this, there is a high density of game in the dry season but since quite a lot of the reserve is mopane woodlands (a favorite location for animals during the rains and early dry season) good game viewing is expected all year round.

This river system attracts a wide variety of game. Familiar favourites include: Elephant, Buffalo, Giraffe, Kudu, Impala, Tsessebe, Hippo, Crocodile, Genet, Honey Badger and a host of Plains Game. Rare Antelope breeds including Roan, Sable & Eland, not normally seen in the Okavango region, occur here. As the Gomoti is the main water source in the area, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and Wild Dog come down to the riverside to drink and hunt, of course! The locations and views are spectacular with the classic flooding of the Okavango across the adjacent seasonal floodplains. For those keen on bird-watching, the combination of the wetlands and the drier Acacia and Mopane veldt provide a perfect habitat for a variety of aquatic species including Open Billed Storks, Hammerkops, Egrets, Ibis and forest/savannah dwellers including Raptors, Shrikes, Drongos, Sunbirds, Ground Hornbills and so on.

ACTIVITIES:
Game drives (day & night) in a private concession adjacent to Moremi Game reserve, on & off road, 6 people per vehicle only, driver & tracker (on night game drives). Seasonal water activities on Gomoti river and game walks available depending on local conditions.

Pom Pom Camp (Okavango Delta):
Pom Pom Camp bathing

Pom Pom Camp is located on Pom Pom Island in a private concession situated in the heart of the Okavango Delta and on the head waters of the Xudum river system. The area lies on the western boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve and offers superb Okavango scenery and a true Okavango wilderness experience.
An 18 – bedded safari camp, built and designed in the style of safari camps of old. The camp overlooks a scenic lagoon and is quietly nestled under a grove shady of trees. The camp has 9 large walk-in tents, all with en suite showers, flush toilets and although roofless, the bathrooms are enclosed for privacy, security and importantly offer you a truly unique bush adventure. This is a camp for the safari traditionalist!
There is the possibility of seeing numerous different species of game, however Pom Pom is also about the nature experience as much as anything else. In addition to big game, Pom Pom is a bird-watcher’s paradise and within a maze of water passages you will find the busy Pied King Fisher and countless other birds that flourish in the water ways. One such bird is the African Jacana, or commonly known as the “Lilly Trotter” which, with it’s long sticklike leg’s runs along the top of lily pads without causing so much as a ripple! And….. for your comfort, game drives are offered in new, luxury open-viewing land cruisers, with a tracker and a driver / guide.

Day 1
Your African experience starts with a short light aircraft transfer from Maun or Kasane into the Delta, taking in the magnificence of the winding, papyrus fringed channels that make up one of the worlds greatest wet land wonders from a birds eye perspective. In the afternoon explore the surrounding Okavango channels by motorboat, which affords excellent game and bird watching opportunities. In the evening enjoy dinner in the true wilderness of the Okavango Delta.

Day 2
Enjoy morning and afternoon activities with your lodge that will bring you closer and also teach you more about this amazing water wonderland. Animal species you may encounter during your experience consist of elephant, buffalo, an array of antelope species as well as predators such as lion, leopard, wild dog and hyena. The area is a birders paradise with over 240 different species inhabiting the delta. Activities are land or water borne, please see below for activities offered per lodge.
