The Hide (Hwange) Safari

The Hide:
Situated on the eastern boundary of the famous Hwange National Park in a 5 square km area, The Hide Safari Lodge is one of the few private camps in the National Park itself. The Hide has been voted 16 consecutive times as the “Best Safari Camp – Tented“ so you know your trip is going to be exceptional.

Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe's largest park both in size (just over 14 600 square kilometres) and in the variety of animals that can be seen here (over 100 mammal and 400 bird species). It has long been known for its abundant and diverse wildlife. In particular, the park is known for herds of elephant (in excess of 20,000 now) and what is thought to be one of the largest populations of African wild dog left in the world. Large prides of lion and buffalo are frequently seen here and you have a good chance of spotting leopard in addition to cheetah and spotted hyena. The wild and woolly brown hyena also occurs here and is something of a rarity.

A significant feature of Hwange is the absence of permanent surface water. Animals rely heavily on a series of waterholes, many of which dry up completely during drought years. The Friends of Hwange now maintain a number of these waterholes throughout the year thereby ensuring the livelihoods of thousands of animals, and excellent game viewing as wildlife congregates at these points.

Whether on a drive to one of Hwange’s game-rich pans, on foot within our private concession or sleeping out in the Dove’s Nest, there is never a dull moment. In fact, the waterhole just metres from The Hide attracts such a variety of life that you may not need to roam far from your verandah to be a part of the action.

The park is situated between Bulawayo and the world famous Victoria Falls. Hwange park is about a 2 hour drive from Victoria Falls. It has a good road infrastructure.

The Hide Hwange accommodation

Accommodation at The Hide Main Camp is in 10 large, East African style luxury canvas tents under thatch, all overlooking the main waterhole. The Tents have a myriad of different configurations with indoor and /or outdoor bathtubs and showers, hand basin and flush toilet along with a teak dressing table and, most importantly, piping hot water all day!

The spacious bedrooms are very tastefully furnished with solid Zimbabwe teak furniture and each is individually decorated. There are eight standard tents and two luxury or honeymoon tents. Each tent is mosquito-proofed and has an en suite bathroom, a fan for your comfort in summer and extra warm blankets and hot water bottles for the cool winter months. One tent is wheelchair friendly.

The new Wine Cellar and Underground Hide at The Hide were planned, designed and created for the adventure-takers, the thrill-makers and the pleasure-seekers out there.

The Private Hide:
As open as the vast expanse in which it is set, the Private Hide is where time stands still and ‘safari’ happens everywhere you look. With 360-degree views and the waterhole nearby, The Private Hide provides a spectacular space away from it all. Here you can quietly watch the animals and birds, dine exclusively, celebrate a special occasion, relax with cocktails, sit around the glowing fire pit… the possibilities are as endless as the vista.

When using The Private Hide, guests stay in The Hide’s tents – Tent 7, 6 and/or 5, depending on the numbers. Tents 7 and 6 are large deluxe or family tents, which can accommodate two adults and two children in full-size beds. Each room has its own en suite bathroom – indoor bath, inside and outdoor shower and hot water all day. All rooms are mosquito-proofed and have fans for your comfort during the warmer months.

*An exclusive use option utilizing the tents on the far end of camp for up to 8 adults.
*Comes with a private guide, private vehicle and private dining.
*All ages welcome. Children under 5yrs are free of charge.
*Single supplements apply at a 25% surcharge. Green and Mid Season allow for one free single supp per booking.

Tom's Little Hide:
As a family-owned camp, we love the idea of families gathering and sharing the life-changing experience of being on safari together. And Tom’s Little Hide is perfect, especially as children of all ages are welcome here. Built as a tribute to Tom Preston, Tom’s Little Hide is a beautifully authentic safari house set just along from The Hide.

It is here that children’s laughter echoes the loerie bird’s distinctive call and where adults’ excited recollections of the day are uninhibited. With no worries about intruding on other guests, Tom’s Little Hide offers the opportunity to really let go and relax. As Tom’s is booked out exclusively and comes with its own private guide and vehicle, the freedom extends beyond happy interactions. The days stretch out before you, yours to do as you wish. Perhaps choose to explore the park all day, right to the farthest reaches, or enjoy a lazy morning by the private splash pool before the rigours of another afternoon in paradise.

You can tell at a glance that a lot of love and energy went into the creation of this special safari house. Tom’s Little Hide is delightful, designed to reflect a contemporary African style with surprising little distinctive touches. It is made up of three large adjacent rooms, all with en suite bathrooms, and each room looks out over the waterhole, which is a constant scene of activity – your veranda is as good as any safari vehicle.

The bedrooms are each individually decorated and furnished with solid Zimbabwean teak furniture. All the rooms are mosquito-proofed and have fans for warmer days. Rooms 1 and 2, both double en suite bedrooms, form the main part of Tom’s Little Hide and can also accommodate one child in each on a roomy day bed. The bedrooms are linked by a dining room and outside veranda, complete with sparkling splash pool. Room 3 is more of a family tent with an outside bathroom and inter-leading children’s room, which can accommodate two children. Altogether, up to 10 guests – 6 adults and 4 children – can stay at Tom’s Little Hide. Because of its proximity, Tent 10 of The Hide’s main camp can also be incorporated into Tom’s Little Hide to include two more adults, if necessary.
Meals and activities are enjoyed privately and in your own time, children of all ages are welcome here and you can relax and enjoy a special, spacious, group safari experience with family and friends at Tom’s Little Hide.

*An exclusive use option (up to 6 adults & 4 children). Comes with a private guide & vehicle, private dining & private pool.
*All ages welcome. Children under 5yrs are free of charge.

Just imagine:
You’re sitting on the deck at The Hide ‘A’ frame (main dining and lounge area). The sun has just set, its residual warmth a soft tinge of pink in the sky. Just then, a family of elephants strolls into the scene and up to the waterhole. You watch, fascinated by their interactions. Now, here’s where you jump into action. Without the need for a guide or host, you can go directly from the deck into the underground hide and observe the elephant family from up-close. Just step off the deck and slip down the steps into a whole new world. Along a tunnel, you’ll walk for about 10 metres under the surface of the earth – and then emerge into a “window on the waterhole”, where you can sit quietly, the unobserved observing. It’s a special new addition and makes the experience of “game viewing” more intense and personal.

Needless to say, the photographic opportunities at this range are unequaled.

Along the same tunnel, guests are delighted to find, hidden away in the wall, a real wine cellar. Perfectly cooled at a steady 17 degrees Celsius, ambient-lit and stocked with a small selection of fine wines from around the world, this is a welcome addition to an already all-sensory experience at The Hide. Guests are invited to choose the wine they’d like with dinner – or suggestions are made based on wine pairing experts’ recommendations.

The Hide Hwange Safari - Cheetah

Activities/excursions offered are: morning and afternoon guided walks, morning and afternoon game drives; night drives with a spotlight, “hide sits‟ around pans and bush breakfasts. An overnight sleep-out in the “Dove‟s Nest” tree house for 2 people can be arranged.

The park has a notable bird population with over 400 species recorded to date; the variety is truly astonishing. Morning, afternoon and evening/night drives will normally head out for 2-3 hours through a variety of eco-systems and habitats. We like to stop for coffee or tea and biscuits in a lovely spot and see what might happen past. In the late afternoon, we’ll find a place to pull out the cooler boxes and watch the sun set with due reverence – every one is different.
