Samara is an award-winning private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape (70 000 acres) and is situated in the malaria-free Great Karoo – the Africa you have dreamed of and read about, wide open plains and breathtaking mountain vistas under star-filled African skies, yet remarkably within easy access of the Garden route either via road (A 2.5-hour drive from Port Elizabeth), or directly onto our runway.

Activities on offer include game drives, guided walks, luxury star bed sleep-outs, wilderness picnics, birding, mountain biking in the Karoo landscape, indoor and outdoor dining and conservation activities.

World class accommodation is provided in two intimate five-star luxury game lodges. Karoo Lodge, a homely and comfortable renovated farmstead overlooking an amphitheatre of mountains, sleeps 18. The Manor, is an exclusive-use villa with private pool, chef, butler and ranger, which sleeps 8 so we haven't given further info here for our honeymoon package, but if you want details, do let us know.

Samara forms part of a greater vision to create South Africa’s third largest protected area in a global biodiversity hotspot in the Eastern Cape. In staying with us you help achieve this grand vision.

Accommodation:
Samara Karoo Lodge Suite accommodation

Karoo Lodge can accommodate up to 18 guests in 9 double rooms, keeping it intimate and exclusive. Decorated in a chic and understated manner, it embraces comfort and elegance whilst retaining the style of the Karoo.

Three Karoo Suites are standalone cottages a short distance from the main homestead. Each has a fireplace, air-conditioning and luxury en-suite bathroom with large separate bath and shower and two washbasins. Private covered patios with outdoor seating provide the ideal location for morning coffee or a nightcap under the stars. These suites even have outdoor showers with magnificent views of the Eastern Cape Karoo!

Four Game Lodge Suites are found inside the main homestead. They are spacious, light and airy, with air-conditioning and en-suite bathroom with large freestanding bath and shower. These suites open onto the wide wraparound verandah with outdoor seating synonymous with traditional Karoo farmhouses.

The two final rooms are named the Sibella Suites after Sibella, Samara's famous cheetah (deceased). The Sibella Suites are located a little walk away by the waterhole where birdlife abounds and antelope, rhino and buffalo slake their thirst in the early morning and late afternoon. These suites are interleading and provide ideal luxury accommodation for families with young children. Each game lodge suite has a shower, basin and air-conditioning. The shared wooden deck provides welcome shade during hot summer days.

Or for the adventurous, What could be more romantic than a night out under the stars, with only your loved one and the Milky Way for company? Perhaps the luxury of a four-poster bed with billowing mosquito net and waking up to birdsong as another day dawns in Africa.

The diverse landscape of Samara is breathtaking. With four of South Africa’s seven biomes: Grassland, Nama Karoo, Thicket and Savannah, Samara’s abundant wilderness preserves a complex and diverse ecosystem, providing habitat for over 60 mammal species. Among more common species, such as the Kudu and Duiker, the secretive Aardvark and the once endangered White Rhino roam.

Aardvark

Samara is home to many Aardvark and is one of very few places in South Africa where you are pretty much guaranteed to spot the elusive Aardvark. Samara will whisk you off just after dark or after dinner and include Aardvark viewing together with your evening game drives. A dedicated Aardvark Safari is also on offer.

Aardvarks are nocturnal, usually waiting until dark before they emerge from their burrows. Their night-time travels average one to three miles but can range up to eighteen miles a night.

Giraffes can be seen peeking over the thorny Acacia canopy, while Cheetah crouch, hidden in the grass, waiting for an opportunity to stretch their legs and test the speed of the Hartebeest. At Samara, cheetah conservation is paramount and you can see these graceful and extraordinary creatures in the wild. Participate in cheetah tracking on foot or on your daily game drives.

Discover the secrets of Samara as you explore the untouched Plains of Camdeboo that once staged the massive migrations of millions of Springbok. Fossils that predate the dinosaurs and well-preserved Bushman paintings offer a fascinating insight into some of the historical intricacies of our earth’s past. 4 of South Africa’s 7 biomes on one property.

Samara Private Game Reserve is a property quite unlike any other - just perfect for your African Romantic Safari Honeymoon.

The area is free from malaria and other tropical diseases.
