Get Married with Elephants at Knysna Elephant Park

The Knysna Elephant Park was created due to the struggle of Elephants in the Knysna Forest, who for many years roamed freely in large numbers in their natural forest habitat. Today, a sad testimony to our society’s conservation failure, a mere 3 have been reported to survive in the dwindled forest area, making their future uncertain.

At Knysna Elephant Park, with the help of the resident African elephants and the well-informed guides, you will learn about the sad and mystical story of the Knysna Elephants – the world’s Southern most elephants. The park offers a rare and exciting opportunity to get close to these gentle giants, who live in a controlled, free range environment in the heart of the famous Garden Route, thriving on all the love and attention they get.

In order to cater for all preferences a range of inspiring experiences are offered. The Daily Tour provides the shorter experience of meeting, feeding and interacting with our gentle giants. For longer experiences Elephant Back Rides or Walks are offered, while the Exclusive Sunrise / Sunset Safaris and Sundowners provide more private and intimate encounters.

View our Knysna Elephant Park Visits and Elephant Back Safari page for more information on the tour options available.

The first two Elephants were introduced to the Knysna Elephant Park during October 1994, fondly named Harry and Sally. Harry and Sally had escaped a Kruger culling program. Harry and Sally can be seen still thriving at the park today.

The elephants that are now in the Knysna Elephant Park are all orphans rescued from culling operations in the Kruger Park, except for Thandi who was born at the park.

The Knysna Elephant Park's elephants are provided with five-star board and lodging, and their diets are supplemented with scientifically formulated feeds, supervised by veterinarians. They have free range of our 60 hectare park on which there is plenty to eat, some big trees to rub up against and two large dams for bathing and drinking.
The hefty family continue to entertain and educate tourists and school children, who are privileged to have a close-up and personal encounter with these gentle giants, and leave having gained a healthy respect for these wonderful animals, and a better understanding of the African elephant and his plight across the continent.
