Mozambique Special Offers - On the Mozambique shore of Lake Malawi, the 9th largest lake in the world, you will find Nkwichi Lodge - the ideal romantic hideaway and the perfect ending to an African Safari.

Nkwichi Lodge beach

Lake Malawi (Lake Niassa as it is know in Mozambique) is approximately 560km long, 80km wide and up to 700m deep, and forms the eastern border between Malawi and Mozambique. The lake's fresh water is crystal clear and contains a greater variety of indigenous fish species of than any other lake in the world.

Nkwichi Lodge lies on the Mozambique shoreline at one of the most beautiful points on the lake. It has been carefully designed to provide comfort and privacy for guests. With a maximum of only 14 people staying at Nkwichi, the lodge can offer guests the highest levels of service in a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere.

The beach on the shores of the lake with its fine, white sand is the central feature at the heart of the lodge. Nkwichi prides itself on practicing responsible tourism. By staying at the lodge guests are contributing to nature and the development of the community. The lodge provides wages for over 75 local members of staff. Their salaries support up to 15 members of their direct families. This means that by staying at the lodge you will have an impact on the lives of over a thousand people.

Wild and remote, northern Mozambique is often referred to as the unexplored Africa. The Eastern Shores of the lake are sparsely populated with little outside access.

Nkwichi Canoeing

Nkwichi lodge has successfully demarcated and protected an area of 650 hectares (4km of lake shore, 8 beaches) from poaching and fires. As a result zebra, warthog, kudu and otter are starting to return and can sometimes be seen around the lodge. Additionally, a huge conservation area of 120,000 hectares (roughly the size of greater London) has been established under the name of the local communities; The Manda Wilderness Community Conservation Area (MWCCA) - covering an area between the lakeshore and the Messinge River, 40km to the east. The lakeshore and escarpment have dry land forests, while thinly wooded savannah and marsh land exists on the plateau. It is a pristine wilderness, with great potential for both wildlife and tourism – recent wildlife sightings in the reserve include wild dog, elephant, bushbuck, reedbuck, duiker, sable, hippo and leopard and lion.

Trekking safaris into the wilderness are arranged through the lodge.

Guests are welcome to visit and learn about various development projects initiated and supported by the lodge. These are partly financed by your stay at the lodge. All the staff at the lodge are from the surrounding Nyanja Communities, they are warm, welcoming and exceptionally friendly. As a result of this and the project initiated by the lodge, an unprecedented relationship has been developed between the Lodge and the communities within a 60 km radius from the lodge.

At Nkwichi you can choose the level of activity to suit you from total relaxation to adventurous activities and excursions. All activities are included in the price, so there is no need to feel under pressure in anyway, just do what you want to.

Activities available at Nkwichi Lodge:
Swimming & Snorkeling:
The tropical fresh waters of Lake Niassa are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. You can swim off the main beach and many of the chalets have private access points down to the crystal clear waters. Snorkeling at Nkwichi is some of the best in the lake; gear is available free of charge. The snorkeling is superb around the rocks in front of the lodge, teaming with bright rainbow color cichlids which are endemic to the lake. On calm days, the visibility in the water can be 30 meters.

Canoeing & Kayaking:

There are 4 modern Canadian canoes, which are ideal for exploring the rocks, rivers and beaches along the shoreline; this is also an excellent way to watch birds. They may be taken out on your own (for those who know how) or with an experienced guide. There are a few surf kayaks and a fibre-glass racing kayak available for the more experienced.

Sailing & Fishing:
Fishing rods and fishing equipment are available at the office – this operates on a catch and release policy. For keen fisherman there is also the opportunity to learn the ancient fishing skills of the lake in a traditional dugout canoe – but be warned, it is not as easy as it may look!
For experienced sailors there is a 16 footer hobie cat available for sailing on the lake – for those not so experienced, short complimentary sailing lessons are available.
Yellow fin – the smaller two wooden sailing dhows – can also be taken out on short sailing safaris, sun set cruises and picnics.

Short Walks & Excursions:
There are a number of short walks available, to explore the wilderness area behind and around the lodge.

Community Projects:

Guests are welcome to visit and learn about various development projects initiated and supported by the lodge. These are partly financed by your stay, with US$ from every bed night donated to these projects. Through village committees, many successful projects have been established, from primary schools to maternity clinics. The children from the village will enthusiastically take over the tour from your guide and are delighted to show you around their school. Traditional dancing ceremonies, football matches and other big social events are a very entertaining day out.

Historical Tours:
An easy day spent cruising in a dhow with a tour around the churches and markets Cobué and Likoma Island.

Getting to Nkwichi Lodge:
Nkwichi Lodge is very remote which is what makes it so special. There are a variety of ways to get to Nkwichi Lodge (either from Malawi or Mozambique) from a spectacular flight across Lake Malawi (Niassa), a stately passage on a historic lake steamer, or a drive across the rugged landscape of southern Malawi and northern Mozambique. We will arrange this all for you once you make your booking.
